The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including schools and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
Our school, built well before the ADA laws, is still lacking in several areas we should address now. Widening doors, door levers instead of knobs, ramp access points around the building, and accessible sink and fountain heights and fixtures are examples of the many changes we need to make throughout the building.
There are also some fire safety issues we are required by law to eliminate with this renovation to make sure our school is safe and code compliant.
